Just back from California once again. I become convinced that it is probably one of the most beautiful places on earth. But maybe I just need to get around more. Of course I love seeing the land everywhere. How the earth buckles and stretches and reflects the sky differently everywhere. And of course many of the really beautiful parts of California are dotted with suburban sprawl, everyone having their own personal piece of heaven. I guess its just that California is so big. I love the way the mountains drop off into the sea so tha you really feel that you are at the end of a continent. Then again I really haven't stood at the edge of many continents. Islands in the caribean are pretty different, and the seas are somehow quite different from the oceans.... Though I always wonder how the map people decide where to draw the boundaries? I'll reserve my judgement on ocean coasts for the time being. Today's my birthday once again and I am sitting in the Atlas Cafe eating a Cubano sandwich (my favorite.) I'm planning to go and play pool in a few minutes with a couple friends who will politetly loose to me. I started celebrating riding on a Horse through the hills around San Diego last week. And we spent a few more days in the Desert which is always just so amazing for the soul. When your on vacation someplace new and there are so many new things to try, I recommend that you don't. Of course try new things, but if you have a nice meal, or a nice cup of coffee at a place where the people seem nice and you're around for a few days, go back again. If you come a few times you'll get an idea of the rhythms and energy of a place, much more than you can getting a snapshot on one visit. Try it sometime. How am I doing this year, well a little stressed currently. Odd to be stressed upon returning from vacation, but my work has been in this kind of up in the air wait and see state for a long time now. And it's not refreshing to come back and still be up in the air. And I hate that that is adding extra stress onto Evee who is getting well into the nesting state of being pregnant. Also I've been doing taxes and gathering yet more papers for the INS since I got back and none of that helps one relax. Also I feel a lot like my friends are really spread out these days. I've had an overall good feeling about it, being all electronic and in the ether, I don't feel terribly dissconnected from my friends, in fact I feel a litl of good energy coming from friends in all quarters. (a nice text message came from Kathi on her way to a fstival in Mexico) And thats good in a way that makes me feel connected to this big earth, but at the same time I wish I could gather my friends under a red tent on a vast plain for a month. Anyway, I'm feeling pretty smart, and my fortune cookies have been relatively positive and somethings going to change one way or another. Evees getting rounder and lovlier everyday, the little person in her tummy is kicking and sumersaulting all night. Evees so amazing sometime spreading bringing birthday cheer in the form of a super super tasty cheescake on a tired Monday night. I'm looking forward to seeing Molly, she was said she'd love to come out camping with us, so hopefully we can make that happen sometime this summer. My sister is working out of her home office fixing up her fancy new house, and in general taking over that poor little town in Florida she moved to. Taylor is off being a Zemi in Bali.. In fact, When I first wrote this I was in the midsts of writing a review for Zemi17's performance "Orkestra Jankrik dan Gamelan Listrik Aneh" which he mailed from Indonesia. The first few tracks of it are online here, if you are so inclined. I thought the first track "sounded like a pilgrimmage through an elastic forest to hear a devotional hymm." Anyway, the rest of my birthday evening wound up to be pretty mellow, I shot pool pretty well for one who plays pool every six months or so. Or at least the friends who could stop by were polite enough to lose. I locked myself out of my office computer today, with no idea what the administrator password was to get back into it. Luckily windows security isn't all that tough and you can just download a little linux tool to start up yourcomputer and change its passwords without windows noticing. Complacent and blackkat another beautiful event i love danger last weekend. Speaking of which I have to send some music to Kogumo. The Creamsicles are hard at work on their next album in the studio. I was listening to some of the older stuff from their website while we were driving through California, and their sound is really maturing nicely. So I should go home and make a couple of tracks to put in the music section of this site, but I think I have to do something else to pay the bills first so maybe tomorrow evening I can work on my own music some. Or maybe late tonight, since I slept a bit last night. Seems like I'm rambling a bit at the moment, but hey its my blog, and if I'm going to ramble anywhere... I bought this cd by Richie Hawtin, because (although it wasn't hard to get it as an mp3) the retail version of it contains a DVD which is mixed in Dolby 5.1 surround sound. And then it turns out I can't play a 5.1 surround sound DVD (knew I should have stuck with the mp3) in on my stereo at home. But as it turns out, a cd dvd mp3 6.1 dts surround sound system can be won on ebay for like $45 (roughly the cost of a crappy boombox at kmart) so I won one, we'll see what it sounds like next week. Not sure if I'm a winner for getting such a crazy deal, or a loser for buying a stereo to play a cd. ____________________________________________________ This is one of those entries which has been fighting tooth and nail to stay off the internet. The first two times Ive typed it, the internet has sucked it into nothingness. But alas I am not so easily deterred... ____________________________________________________
